“Bad trips” may cause frightening hallucinations, terror, depression or panic attacks. Made from lysergic acid, this drug is one of the strongest mind-altering chemicals. The hallucinogens discussed here exhibit a collection of remarkable properties, some of which can elicit harm, and others which when applied skillfully, can promote healing or wellbeing. This is similar to many other classes of drugs that can be used therapeutically, or abused in destructive ways. It should also be noted that many of the hallucinogen-facilitated treatments presented here are designed as a combination of drug administration plus psychotherapy within a structured treatment context.
Psychedelics
D-lysergic acid diethylamide, better known as LSD or “acid,” is a hallucinogenic drug made from lysergic acid, a natural chemical found in a fungus that grows on rye called Claviceps purpurea. LSD was first created in 1938 by a Swiss chemist named Albert Hoffmann who was searching for new drugs to stimulate patients’ circulation and breathing. Overall, these findings are consistent with the hypothesis that psilocybin diminishes activity in key brain regions and networks implicated in hallucinogen actions.

Nick Warrender, the CEO of Urb, told STAT that while his company’s product was manufactured by a third party, it was also tested at multiple independent labs for illicit substances. He provided STAT with a lab analysis dated Sept. 27, 2022 for the company’s amanita mushroom product, which showed psilocybin was undetected in the product. It is unclear if any of the products analyzed for the MMWR paper were intentionally spiked with these illegal compounds, or if something else caused the products to test positive for these illegal break the cycle of addiction with these strategies to keep dopamine in check substances. Previous FDA testing of Diamond Shruumz products found that the candies contained psilacetin, a compound with a murky legal status believed to have a similar effect on the body as psilocin.
